This is hard, you got any other recommendations for Snootie Wild?

This album is insane. I can’t help but think it’s been considerably held back by still being a Bandcamp exclusive (besides physical copies.) The intro alone is absolutely phenomenal.

      1. 2

seriously this shit is so dope, Boldy easily dropped two of the best albums of the year somehow

Although Bonobo isn’t really hiphop, he’s a damn good producer that makes some wildly amazing music. This article is full of wonderful tips and techniques for experimenting with sound design and making your tracks sound more like your own.

This one is specifically about Ableton, but I’d imagine the processes can be easily translated into whichever DAW you work in. Bonobo details some really great tricks he uses in his own work, definitely worth a short read.

If you’re not familiar with Bonobo, here are some of my favorite tracks of his. He makes some beautiful, chill music.

        Stay the Same feat. Andreya

        Prelude + Kiara

        Break Apart feat. Rhye

I produce just as a hobby, but don’t want to link my music much on this site since I’m the admin and all. Thanks for posting this though, it’s good to have some solid posts for new users to be able to contribute to when they join.

I make music that is both sample based and use plenty of weird synths on top of it. I’m really into finding new ways to manipulate weird sounds and generally just experiment. Love me some Synplant synths that are heavily processed multiple times over.

I usually start with the drums, which I need to improve on anyways, but adding those first gives me a sense of how I want the track to sound from the start so I can begin layering a melody and chords and what not.

My primary DAW is Ableton Live 10, but I also own Logic Pro X and use Reaper sometimes depending on my mood. I tried switching to Logic as my main DAW a few weeks back but Ableton’s workflow is just unmatched for my needs.

I should work on making my tracks more “emotional” just to express myself more, but for the most part I just make things that sound weird and interesting to me. I don’t rap, but I’ve thought about doing it in the future once I get better at producing a bit more, though I don’t think my voice would work too well in hiphop so I might not, we’ll see one day I guess.

Every step of the process is fun in my opinion, but if I had to choose one thing it’d definitely be experimenting with sound design. I don’t really have a least favorite, though I could definitely work on my mixing/mastering and arrangement a bit more instead of relying a bit too heavy on reference tracks. With practice I’ll build more of those skills though.

              Hard agree for Wayne

Yeah stuff like this is fine, just not fresh leaks that may lead to takedown requests.

Things like this are welcome, and I’ll actually make a tag for it right now like unofficial or something. Just no linking to download sites, leak forums, or some unknown Soundcloud profile that uploaded a stolen song/album. I’d rather not have this place be about finding newly leaked music just for legal reasons.

Edit: Made the tag leak because unofficial didn’t sound as fitting. Leaks are leaks, but I’ll be adding how to use this tag in the submission guidelines right now.

              1. 2

Ok great, thanks for the clarification

                1. 1

                  No problem man!

              1. 1

I’ve also added a live tag, suitable for performances, live recordings, and certain videos.

                Examples:

Kendrick Lamar - i (Live on SNL) would be tagged as video and live.

“Fu-Gee-La” The Fugees - Live on SquirtTV on MTV (1994) would be tagged as video and live as well, and the title would be formatted along the lines of The Fugees - Fu-Gee-La (Live on MTV) [1994] or something similar.

KENNY BEATS & BOOGIE FREESTYLE | The Cave: Season 2 - Episode 6 would also be tagged video and live, and I may add another tag for things like this that’s a bit more descriptive, but I’ll save that for another day. Y’all get the point.

                1. 2

you should add a tag for disses and beefs and shit, like how hhh has [SHOTS FIRED]

not sure what your stance is on posting things like that but if you’re fine with that kinda stuff there isn’t really a good tag for it yet

                  1. 1

That’s not a bad idea, I’d be down for that. I’ll add a tag for it right now!

                1. 2

This might be my favorite track by Mac, the beat is so well made and he glides right over it flawlessly. RIP to one of the best

                  1. 3

if i’m trying to get someone into Danny Brown this is always one of the first tracks i play. everyone i’ve played it for loves it because even if you find his voice annoying, you can’t not fuck with the flow and the bars. danny’s punchline game on this track is fantastic and no one ever forgets that last bar

                    1. 1

Same man. His one-liners are so well executed on this one, it’s so hard not to love it. I’m not a huge fan of his newer stuff due to how wild he makes his voice, but XXX is that perfect sweet spot for me.

                      1. 3

I still really fw his new shit, Atrocity Exhibition is fantastic, but XXX remains my favourite album of his too

                    1. 3

Haven’t listened to the rest of the project yet but Pain 1993 is just straight ass. What a mess of wasted potential on all fronts; the beat is boring, Drake sounds like Carti, and Carti sounds like himself trying to imitate 645AR.

                      1. 1

I actually like Carti’s baby voice but damn he overdid it way too hard on this. He found a good sweet spot before but it feels like he’s just trying too hard now, and the adlibs over Drake’s verse don’t fit together one bit

                      1. 3

I’m surprised both Reasonable Doubt and College Dropout have been missed in this thread so far, 2 bonafide classics that easily contend for best debut in history.

For some less obvious and more recent picks, Man On The Moon and Channel Orange I would also say contend. I’m not sure of this forums stance on whether or not r&b should be included on a hip hop discussion board but Channel Orange is a near perfect album and Frank set a new standard for his contemporaries imo. MOTM has proved to be very influential to modern hip hop, you can hear the influence in a lot of rappers today

                        1. 3

To address the part about R&B here, I haven’t really decided on a firm stance with it. I personally think hiphopheads for instance is a bit loose as far as “hiphop adjacent” artists being posted, but I’m probably going to wait to make a definitive rule about until the site gets more growth in order to see what the majority of users here think it should be.

Also, I agree, I’m surprised nobody mentioned Jay or especially Kanye yet. When I saw this thread pop up I thought College Dropout would be the first to hit the comments.

                          1. 2

I agree to an extent. Like I remember seeing someone post Bon Iver’s 22 a million on /r/hhh when it dropped, reason being he is a Kanye collaborator. That’s just dumb lol but for me, I’d love to see r&b discussion alongside the rap discussion here, as i personally don’t know of a lot of places to talk about r&b in depth. but ya waiting for the userbase to grow and then seeing what the majority thinks is a good idea

                            1. 2

Yeah exactly, I’m most likely going to be open to having R&B discussion as well as long as it’s not a stretch like that example you gave since R&B and hiphop are generally pretty intertwined.

                        1. 2

Wow I had no idea Kenny Beats produced this, this came out 4 years ago. Crazy to see Kenny’s progression as a producer.

                          1. 3

Yeah man, he’s been in the game for awhile now. If you didn’t already know, he’s been an EDM producer for awhile as LOUDPVCK, which was originally a duo but has been just Kenny since 2017. It’s definitely not hiphop, but it shows his versatility as a producer pretty well.

                            1. 2

really not a fan of the loudpvck style but it kinda opened my eyes to his skill as a producer

like imo his hiphop beats can be pretty bland a lot of the time but he could absolutely make some unique shit if he wants to

                          1. 2

Probably gonna get shit for this but my favorite Tyler track is still Yonkers. I know he made it as a joke, but that track knocks so hard.

That’s so nuts, because that shit was actually a fucking joke. I made that beat in literally eight minutes. Source

Like damn dude I wish I could make something that knocks that hard in 8 minutes

                            1. 1

There we go, submissions are finally working. Haven’t listened yet but I’m about to head out and grab dinner so I’ll play this during the ride.

Anything else by Smino that you’d recommend? I haven’t heard too much by him

                              1. 2

As far as full length projects, probably blkswn. Some of his best songs are loosies though, I’ll link a few just cause they might be harder to find if you’re only looking at his whole projects.

                                Khlorine [prod. Sango]

                                Kompany [prod. Monte Booker]

                                Kolors [prod. Monte Booker]

                                Menu [prod. monte Booker, THEMpeople]

                                1. 1

Man I don’t know why I never gave Smino a shot, dude’s got a smooth cadence. I had no idea he had a some with Sango, this track bops

                                  1. 2

Yeah he has a few songs with Sango. In general Smino works with some of the best producers

                                    1. 2

I’ll check out his other work right now, thanks for posting this g. Gonna start with blkswn and explore his other stuff from there

                              1. 2

                                Yerrrrrr

Interested to see if some better discussion happens here, something trying to be like pre-100k subscriber HHH sounds good to me.

How long before new users can post things? I’m getting a “Url is an unseen domain from a new user” message.

                                1. 1

Thanks for letting me know about that actually, that shouldn’t be happening. I’ll check it out right now and see what I can do to allow new users to post.

And yeah, with the size of hhh comes a lot of problems naturally. Hopefully this can be a good place to share shit and discuss music without the flood of lower quality content

                                  1. 1

Try submitting again, it should hopefully work this time

                                    1. 1

I’m getting this error when trying to submit: https://prnt.sc/s5javu

Oh I think I forgot to edit one line in the config, now try it and it should work

                                    Dark mode g

                                    1. 1

That’s in the works, but until then if you’d like the site to be dark there’s a few options at the bottom of the about page
